Child & Family Stability
Meet our Opportunity Champion, Jamall Kinard, Executive Director of Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance
Leading on Opportunity: What is your vision for economic mobility in Charlotte-Mecklenburg?
Jamall Kinard: My vision for economic mobility in Charlotte-Mecklenburg revolves around two main factors: Family Stability and Civic Awareness. 1) Family Stability - everyone in Charlotte knowing and understanding the truth behind Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs pyramid - that if someone is always stuck in survival mode, worrying day to day how the basic needs of water, food, health, safety, shelter, etc... are going to be met, then that person will never be able to make it up the pyramid (aka the economic ladder) to self-actualization. ALL organizations have to be working together in Charlotte to ensure that everyone has their basic needs met and have the equitable chance at social and economic success. 2) Civic Awareness - knowing and understanding that there is a system that is working to keep people in survival mode, for the purpose of profit and power, that needs to be reformed into a more equitable one for ALL!
Leading on Opportunity: What does opportunity mean to you?
Jamall Kinard: Opportunity- a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. Making sure that ALL people and organizations, that claim to be doing the work, are dedicated to working together, Consciously and consistently, to make sure those set of circumstances are equitably accessible for everyone to have their righteousness possibilities come into fruition! Potential is universal, opportunity is not! How do we make opportunity as universal as the potential?!
Leading on Opportunity: How does Leading on Opportunity’s North Star Goal inspire and connect to your work?
Jamall Kinard: It aligns perfectly with the work that I am dedicated to, of ensuring Family Stability and Civic Awareness for all communities. Bottom line, for every child in Charlotte-Mecklenburg to have an equal/equitable chance to achieve social and economic success for generations to come, they have to their basic needs met consistently, they have to feel secure, they have to understand who they are as a person, they have to feel like they belong to a stable family/community(something bigger than themselves), and they have to know and self-actualize their talents/skills/abilities. Without a community of strong families who are civically aware of how the system works and knowledge of how to navigate the system no child will have even the slightest chance to achieve social and economic success. I’m happy to be aligned with an organization like Leading On Opportunity who is committed to having the real conversations and doing the transformational work that will truly change systems and build community/social capital for ALL!
Moving Charlotte from 50 out of 50 in economic mobility is a collaborative, community effort. With that in mind, we set a goal to build an Opportunity Movement that celebrates everyone's contributions. On March 26, 2019, we honored 50 Inaugural Opportunity Champions who have gone above and beyond to support implementation and align to one or more of our 21 community-inspired strategies within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force Report. Often without any public recognition, this group of distinguished leaders set the bar high for others in our community to invest in building a stronger equitable community for all children, youth and families.
